Steely Dan

USA

Steely Dan met as students at Bard College in 1967, when Walter Becker and Donald Fagen discovered a mutual love of jazz, blues, and obscure literature — they later named their band after a sex toy from William Burroughs' novel Naked Lunch. By 1974, they'd quit touring entirely to become studio perfectionists, recording with revolving casts of session musicians. Their 1977 masterpiece Aja won a Grammy and helped them sell over 40 million albums worldwide.
