The Allman Brothers Band
The Allman Brothers Band invented Southern rock from Macon, Georgia in 1969. Gregg Allman wrote "Whipping Post" in the middle of the night using burnt matches on an ironing board cover — he had no pen and paper. Their 1971 live album At Fillmore East is widely considered one of the greatest live recordings ever made. Tragically, both lead guitarist Duane Allman and bassist Berry Oakley died in motorcycle accidents three blocks apart, just over a year apart.
