Green Day
Green Day formed in 1987 when teenage friends Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt started a band in the Berkeley punk scene, originally calling themselves Sweet Children before settling on the name in 1989. Their 1994 major-label debut Dookie sold over 20 million copies and revived mainstream interest in punk rock. A decade later, frustrated with George W. Bush, Armstrong wrote the rock opera American Idiot.
