John Denver (born Henry John Deutschendorf, 1943–1997) was named Poet Laureate of Colorado, and his 1972 hit "Rocky Mountain High" was eventually adopted as one of the state's two official anthems. A passionate environmentalist and licensed pilot with over 2,700 flight hours, he died at age 53 when an experimental aircraft he was piloting crashed into Monterey Bay, California, in October 1997.
