Ray Charles

USA

Ray Charles (1930–2004) lost his sight by age 7 and his mother by 15, yet went on to invent soul music by fusing gospel passion with secular blues — a combination that scandalized churches but transformed American popular music. He won 17 Grammys, and his 1960 recording of "Georgia on My Mind" was so beloved that Georgia adopted it as the official state song in 1979. Atlantic Records nicknamed him simply "The Genius."
