Nat King Cole
Nat King Cole sold so many records for Capitol Records in the 1940s and 1950s that the company's iconic circular Hollywood headquarters — completed in 1956 — became known as "The House That Nat Built." In 1956 he made history as the first Black performer to host a nationally televised variety series. After it lost sponsors to racial prejudice, he memorably remarked, "Madison Avenue is afraid of the dark."
