Tom Petty
Tom Petty's first band Mudcrutch flopped — but when it broke up in 1975, he reunited with keyboardist Benmont Tench and guitarist Mike Campbell in Los Angeles to form The Heartbreakers. Their 1976 debut took nearly a year to find an American audience, but "American Girl" and "Breakdown" eventually became classic-rock staples. In 1988, Petty joined Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Jeff Lynne to form the Traveling Wilburys supergroup.
