Black Sabbath

GBR

Black Sabbath formed in Birmingham in 1968 and effectively invented heavy metal — thanks to a factory accident. Guitarist Tony Iommi lost the tips of two fingers in a sheet-metal press at age 17, forcing him to detune his strings to ease the pressure. The result was the doomy, down-tuned sound that defined a genre. Their 1970 album Paranoid sold over 9 million copies.
