Bob Marley (1945–1981), the Jamaican reggae icon, sold over 75 million records and once held the hands of two rival Jamaican prime ministers above his head onstage at the 1978 One Love Peace Concert to symbolise unity amid civil war. He died of melanoma at age 36 — a cancer that started under his toenail, which he had refused to amputate on religious grounds.
