The Police
The Police were never really punk, despite emerging from London's 1977 punk explosion. All three members were accomplished musicians: drummer Stewart Copeland came from prog rock, guitarist Andy Summers had been a session veteran, and frontman Sting had played jazz in Newcastle. Their fusion of punk energy with reggae rhythms produced five massive albums in just seven years before they imploded at the peak of their fame in 1984, having sold 75+ million records.
