Metallica

USA

Metallica formed on October 28, 1981, after drummer Lars Ulrich placed a newspaper ad in the LA Recycler and guitarist James Hetfield answered it. Together they became founders of thrash metal alongside Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax — the "Big Four." Their 1991 self-titled "Black Album" alone has sold over 16 million copies, the best-selling record of the SoundScan era. Original bassist Cliff Burton died tragically in 1986.
