REM

USA

R.E.M. formed in Athens, Georgia in 1980 after guitarist Peter Buck met Michael Stipe at Wuxtry Records, the store where Buck worked. They played their first concert that April in a converted church, calling themselves Twisted Kites. As pioneers of American alternative rock, they sold over 85 million albums, dominated college radio for a decade, and broke through to massive mainstream success with 1991's "Losing My Religion."
