Simple Minds
Simple Minds almost said no to the song that made them. Glasgow school friends Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill, who'd formed the band in 1977, initially thought "Don't You (Forget About Me)" sounded too generic and hesitated to record it — they'd never performed someone else's song before. The 1985 theme to The Breakfast Club became their only US #1, defining a generation of 80s teen cinema in the process.
