Stone Temple Pilots

USA

Stone Temple Pilots were originally called Mighty Joe Young until legal issues forced a name change — they grabbed it from STP motor oil cans and back-formed "Stone Temple Pilots" from the initials. Their 1992 debut Core launched the San Diego band into instant stardom with hits like "Plush" and "Creep." Rolling Stone famously declared them the "worst new band" of 1993, but they had the last laugh, winning a Grammy for "Plush" the following year.
