Ella Fitzgerald

USA

Ella Fitzgerald (1917–1996) became the First Lady of Song almost by accident. At seventeen, she walked onto the Apollo Theater stage in 1934 intending to dance — but after watching the Edwards Sisters perform first, she froze, then sang her mother's favorite song instead. She won the competition, recorded over 200 albums across her career, won 14 Grammys, and became one of the greatest scat singers in jazz history.
