Jimi Hendrix

USA

Jimi Hendrix (1942–1970) was left-handed but couldn't afford a left-handed guitar — so he played right-handed Fender Stratocasters flipped upside down and restrung backwards, accidentally reinventing the instrument's tone in the process. He set his guitar on fire at Monterey in 1967, redefined the US national anthem at Woodstock in 1969, and died at 27 — joining what's now called the 27 Club.
