The Kinks

GBR

The Kinks may have invented heavy metal almost by accident. In 1964, guitarist Dave Davies — frustrated with the clean sound of his Elpico amplifier — slashed the speaker cone with a razor blade, producing the snarling, distorted riff that powers "You Really Got Me." The song hit #1 in the UK, became the first major hit built around power chords, and directly inspired Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, and a generation of hard rock guitarists.
